The Parkhotel is located at the Westersingel, in the museum district of Rotterdam’s city centre. Monumental 19th century buildings typify this avenue and the area contains iconic buildings such as the Boijmans van Beuningen museum (1935, by Van der Steur), the Dutch Architectural Institute (1993, by Jo Coenen) and the Kunsthal (1993, by Rem Koolhaas). The hotel itself was housed in an ensemble of historic villa-like buildings and extended with an 8-story tower in the seventies. The project included the creation of 70 new hotel rooms and a new main entrance for the entire hotel complex on a footprint of just 6 by 12 meters. Consequently, a slender 45 meter high volume is introduced within the highly typified urban context. Through its height, it almost acts as a solitary structure. But at the same time it merges with the vulnerable surroundings through its unique shape and use of materials like stone, glass and zinc. All rooms have panoramic windows in rounded corners that offer highly individual views towards the different parts of Rotterdam and its rapidly developing skyline.
