Milanofiori North Business Park is one of the biggest developments in Europe in its kind. The Masterplan for the area was developed in 2003 by Erick van Egeraat and specifically conceived to address the rising demand for high quality offices in Milan. The entire development will be a self-contained entity covering 218.000 m2 and offers a variety of functions including offices, housing, commercial, retail and leisure facilities, a cinema, a hotel and education facilities. At the heart of the Business Park lies the Entertainment and Leisure Square. Vivid, colorful and playful, this modern Italian piazza incorporates different facilities organized around a big square. Restaurants bars, shops and a library all find their place together with a multiplex cinema hosting 10 projection rooms, a modern fitness and spa complex and a hotel of approximately 8.500 m2.
The buildings around the square offer a continuously mutable view with their articulated roof lines, inclined wooden pillars, varying volumetric and exciting architectural language. At the same time, the ensemble remains coherent through an understandable rhythm of facade materials and sequence. Conceived as a large open area, the inner square is fit to host different events and function as a place of gathering. The various materials used in the square range from wood and stone to cement while water games, small fountains and lighting effects set the square apart.
An entirely different appearance was given to the four star hotel. It stands slightly separate from the square, in a more intimate and quiet corner. The skin of the building is a combination of a vertically oriented wooden facade on one side and white facades interspersed with irregular openings. Together with the volume articulation, this ensures the hotel exudes hospitality and peacefulness. The luxurious design of the interior is different in each area, underlining the various functions and atmospheres.
In order to cut to a minimum the energetic consumption, several materials and technologies were used such as reduction of solar heat transmittance and recycling of soil water for air conditioning systems. Solar panels cover almost the entire need for electricity in the complex. Construction of the approximately 25.000 m2 buildings and square was completed by June 2009; the hotel will be open for public by the end of the year.
