Comprising one hundred hectares, this railway area divided the city of Stuttgart into two parts for more than a century. German Railways decided to upgrade all terminals in anticipation of the arrival of high speed trains and the monumental 19th century station of Stuttgart was the first on their list. The project included a new train station as well as an urban development scheme while the brief emphasized the integration of the design with the urban fabric of Stuttgart combining comfort, efficient infrastructure, an abundance of natural light and the ultimate goal of attracting more rail users.
Erick van Egeraat’s design includes a new underground station with a large glazed roof that allows natural light to enter the station. An etched stone pattern gives the glass surface the appearance of a solid surface at ground level where it functions as a public space, clearly defining the presence of the station. The new public square is the heart of the urban planning proposal for the entire area and in order to enhance the vibrancy of the location, the design proposes a mix of functions including offices, shops and housing. It makes use of both a standard rectilinear grid and roads that follow the topography and includes generously wide boulevards that double as linear parks. Erick van Egeraats’ intention was for the design to celebrates the city’s dynamics and contribute a contemporary response.
