The Oosterdoks Island is a key area of the redevelopment of the southern bank of the IJ river in Amsterdam, an area which connects the inner city with the newly developed living and working areas on the old harbour piers along the IJ. Within the masterplan developed by Erick van Egeraat the feasibility of the site was assessed and spatial and programmatic possibilities of the redevelopment were provided. The urban scheme presents a unique urban model for the island with the aim to create an inner city environment with a vibrant character that maintains the identity and atmosphere of this distinctive location in the city. On 210.000 square meters of gross floor area, the urban concept offers a high density and varied mix of functions for living, working, commercial, cultural and leisure activities. The concept introduces a subdivision into six plots, defined by a network of streets, urban spaces and semi-public sheltered areas, a theme recalling the characteristic radial structure of Amsterdam. The new public spaces link the various building programs and activities and connect as well to a waterfront quay which opens the area with magnificent views to the harbour. The urban design aims to combine building and public space in such a way that creates a lasting urban structure as an extension of the city. A selection of eleven internationally renowned architects, including Erick van Egeraat, work out the architectural language in the framework of the masterplan.
