Exhibition Pop-Art Rotterdam

During its first years of existence, curator Wim van Krimpen of the Kunsthal in Rotterdam commissioned Erick van Egeraat to design several exhibitions starting with the Pop Art exhibition in 1995. The Kunsthal is renowned for both the architecture of its accommodation and its exhibitions and for this particular exhibition, the main hall even underwent a spectacular change. Inspired by the glamorous elements in Pop Art, Erick van Egeraat had a gigantic wooden stairway measuring 21 meters wide and 2.85 meters high installed to connect the ground and first floors. It also provided a clear distinction between the different sections of the exhibition. British and American works were on opposite sides of the stairs with the plaster figures of George Segal featuring on the steps. European work was exhibited centre stage on the ground floor. The stairs transformed the exhibition space into a theatre-like environment with the exhibition as the show. They proved to be such a success that the Kunsthal decided to keep them for a considerable time even after the Pop-Art exhibition closed, thus adding an unusual exhibition area to its repertoire.
