Chess and Billiard Club Khanty-Mansiysk

Erick van Egeraat was invited by the government of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous region to design this project, in preparations for the 2010 Chess Olympiad that will be held in its capital. As the organizer, and expecting a lot of global media attention, the government understood the need to deliver signature buildings that underline the prosperous state the city is in, and to expand its role as an ambassador of the region and its hosting qualities. The Chess & Billiard situated close to the center of the city, on a plot located between Lopareva street and Kalinina street, opposite to a popular park. Among others due to the challenging schedule, it was preferred to work with two individual buildings. In the near future, a third building may be added hosting an international boxing training school. The buildings each have their individual characteristics, while in basic model of organization, materialization, and application of the materials; they have a similar, well controlled approach. The Chess Club building is designed around a central, double height, very silent playing hall with tribunes. This hall is very flexible in use in order to allow different other events for the city to take place. Around this hall daylight requiring functions as administration and individual playing halls are spread. The billiard club is designed around a series of spaces containing pool and billiard tables, that require no daylight. Around these spaces a series of daylight requiring administration functions etc. are spread. The final appearance of the Chess club is a dynamic development of an orthogonal box. The final appearance of the Billiard Club is a dynamic decentralized development of a sphere. The facades are finished with zinc painted sheets. The sheets of the two buildings each have their own color, but are similar in size and detailing. They overlap each other like losanges, thus being able to sustain the tolerances the extreme temperature differences require. The Chess Club is currently under construction and ahead of schedule.
